The Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) has recently confirmed the appointment of Professor John Mamo as its Chairman. This was announced in a statement by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Financial Services, Innovation and the Digital Economy, in which it was stated that the appointment of Professor Mamo is being made on the positive recommendation of the Parliamentary Committee for Public Appointments.
After graduating Bachelor of Arts in 1966, Professor Mamo was awarded a scholarship to Oxford University. During the same week, the MFSA Board announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive Officer, namely Mr Joseph Cuschieri, who will take on this role from the 24th April 2018. He will also sit on the Board.
The MFSA said in a statement that this is the first time in its history the MFSA will have a Chief Executive Officer and non-executive Chairman, following changes made last year to the MFSA Act. The statement adds that this structure conforms to those of other European regulators, and has been implemented following consultation with the European Central Bank.
As Chief Executive, Mr Cuschieri will be responsible for the general management and services of the Authority, and its development and implementation strategy, including reforms in the financial services sector.
